The Auburn plan is named after Auburn Ave. in downtown Atlanta, which was once home to one of the highest concentrations of African American wealth in the country. Today, Auburn Ave. is still known for its heavy concentration of black-owned businesses. The Auburn Ave. corridor is a part of the Sweet Auburn Historic District, which includes numerous landmarks of great importance to the civil rights movement such as Big Bethel AME Church and Ebenezer Baptist Church.
